In this blog will see the low grade fatigue symptoms that many patients have and associated affected gastrointestinal symptoms, sleep symptoms.
A normal digestion and absoption of the nutrition has association with normal gastric secretion and other normal physilogical activity specially when there is normal sleep present. Lack of adequate sleep has relation with sense of feeling tirredness or low grade fatigue during the daytime. There is change in acid secretion ( usually increse) when there is lack of sleep or not adequate sleep. When one is experiencing insomnia symptoms which can be either a sleep onset insomnia or sleep maintaince insomnia or early awakening then there is associated GERD symptoms and low grade tirreness. Fatigue in most cases is mild in nature in most cases in early phage of the chronic fatigue symptoms but may increase if there is any underlying sleep order present and remains untreated. Chronic lack of sleep have relationship with increase in gastric acid secretion and other stress hormones and increase in GERD symptoms and low grade fatigue symptoms
Many patients with the sleep problems, daytime sleepiness, fatigue have associated sleep apnea or some may have its mild version of sleep apnea or called upper airway resistance syndrome or called UARS. The difference in this is more technical defination of the respiratory event and how it is scored on the diagnostic polysomnography or sleep study, either way patient suffering from this are tirred and sleepy. In the UARS there are all exclusive hypopneas and there are no apnea present. In sleep apnea it many be the combination of the apnea and the hyponeas. Apnea stands for the complete stoping of respiration for atleast 10 seconds or longer and assocated arousal. Where as in the hyponeas it is partial stop breathing and not complete with associated arousal and some change in the oxygen saturation. Either way the people suffering from mild or moderate sleep apnea may have experiencing the low to moderate fatigue and daytime sleepinss like the people suffering from Upper airway resistance syndrome.
Usually with that mild sleep apnea or USRS patients experiences other Gastrointestinal symptoms of irritable bowel symptoms symptoms, abdominal fullnes, cramps may be present with associated fatigue symptoms. GI work up may be needed if symptoms persists. If sleep apnea or UARS is present the symptoms may improve with the sleep apnea treatment by improvement of the sleep and feels more rested in the morning when they wake up.
GERD has many causes like smoking, alcholol use, drug side effects, sleep deprivation, stress, acidic food etc. Sleep problem is a key and may need to evaluated and speically if sleep apnea is present then will be treated with the Continous positive airway pressure or CPAP.
Many patient suffering from sleep problems also have irregular sleep wake cycle like doing to bed at different time and waking up at different time most of the days in the week and with that the gastric acid secretion varies and usually may increase giving rise of GERD symptoms. Improvement of the sleep hygiene and sleep restriction therapy many be needed for the insomnia paient.
